唐 dynasty, the golden age of Chinese history. It was a time of great prosperity and cultural development, with poets like Li Bai and Du Fu creating some of the most beautiful poetry in Chinese literature. But it was also a time of war and conflict, as China faced threats from both within and without.

The Song dynasty was marked by peace and prosperity, but it was also a time of division. The north-south split led to two separate governments, each claiming legitimacy over all China. This period saw the rise of Neo-Confucianism, which emphasized individual moral cultivation.

The Mongol-led Yuan dynasty brought together people from all corners of Asia under one rule. It was an era of trade and cultural exchange between East Asia and Central Asia. However, it was also marked by brutal suppression of native Chinese culture.

The Ming dynasty is famous for its porcelain artistry and woodblock printing technology that allowed mass production of books like "Journey to the West". But it's also known for its rigid Confucian society where social hierarchy remained unchanged for centuries.

The Qing (Manchu) dynasty saw China reach new heights in science, technology, arts & architecture but it's often remembered as an era when foreign invasions weakened China's power structure; e.g., Opium Wars led to unequal treaties that ceded Hong Kong to Britain.

After 1912 AD when Manchu rulers were overthrown by revolutionaries who established Republic Of China (ROC), there followed years tumultuous civil wars among various factions until Chiang Kai-Shek established Nationalist Party government on mainland before fleeing Taiwan after Communist Party won Civil War in 1949.

Since then Taiwan has been governed separately while Mainland is ruled by People's Republic Of China (PRC). Both claim legitimacy as sole representative government for entire country despite no formal recognition or diplomatic relations between them since PRC took United Nations seat back in '75 due largely due ideological differences – democracy vs communism – along with differing political systems & governance structures etcetera...
