Shen Dechun's life was a dramatic and conflict-ridden one. He inherited a large fortune and lived a luxurious life, but his actions also led to the exploitation of local villagers.
In 1918, when Blue Yutian was appointed as the magistrate of Qingluo County, he faced a shortage of grain funds. He imposed a tax of one thousand yuan per li on the entire county. Shen Dechun volunteered to take responsibility for this amount, which surprised everyone present. Blue Yutian expressed admiration for him and recommended him to become an officer in charge in Meixian County.
Ten years later, under the orders of Xu Chongzhi, Shen Dechun secretly returned to Qingluo County and organized an autonomous army with himself as commander-in-chief. He planned to attack Qingluo Town but failed again after being defeated and forced back home.
Soon afterward, warlord Wang Yongquan launched a counterattack against Shen Dechun out of revenge. Led by Regimental Commander Liu Chuncai from Wang Yongquan's troops attacked Qinquan Village where Shen resided; however Liu suffered heavy casualties while attempting to capture it.
Shen fled once more towards Guangdong Province where he eventually died at home in 1933 without ever facing justice or reconciliation for his past wrongdoings.
It is worth noting that only one son among his children chose not be associated with any political factions during that time period - Shen Chonghui who joined Red Army alongside other revolutionaries fighting against Japanese invasion forces during World War II (WWII).
