Shen Dechun: A Gentleman in the Turbulent Times of Warlords
His story is a tale of both glory and defeat, a legend in Chinese history.
Born into a ordinary family in Qingliu County, Shen Dechun inherited a vast fortune early on. However, he did not content himself with idleness. He organized his own autonomous army and fought ceaselessly between Fujian and Guangdong.
He was once the trusted friend of Blue Yutian, commander of the Cantonese troops, who recommended him for important positions multiple times. After one failed attempt to capture Qingliu County, Shen lost most of his forces but never gave up fighting spirit.
As time went by, Shen came to realize that he was standing on the wrong side. He refused to join hands with warlords he deemed unreliable and eventually chose to retire from public life. It wasn't until the East Route Army liberated Qingliu that he was drawn back into history's whirlpool.
His son Shen Chonghui joined the Red Army alongside them as they marched north against Japan. Yet upon returning home, tragedy struck when bandits killed his parents-in-law on their sixtieth wedding anniversary while they were hosting guests without proper defense measures.
